“Step by Step:” Alton Education Association Members March for Fair Funding in Labor Parade

Alton Education Association in Labor Day Parade

Two dozen members of the Alton Education Association helped spread the word for FAIR FUNDING marching in the Annual Alton Labor Day Parade. Interacting with onlookers, the members handed out hundreds of leaflets and IEA pencils inscribed with the “Fair Funding for All Public Schools” motto. The Alton group was one of six Labor Day events IEA is participating in around the state including Champaign, Chicago, Decatur, Galesburg and Rockford.

“Step by Step,” an old 19th Century labor song goes:

Step by step, the longest march
Can be won, can be won.
Many stones can form an arch,
Singly none, singly none.
And by union what we will,
Can be accomplished still.
Many drops can turn a mill,
Singly none, singly none.

The fight for fair funding will be won step by step, one citizen at time.

Keep up the Pressure!

Over 100 phone calls have been generated today to McHenry Co Democrat State Rep Jack Franks telling him to dump the two-tier pension idea, pay the pension what’s owed and pass a tax increase for education! What’s happening in your area!

Quinn Backs Off Teacher Pay Cut!

Due to your efforts, including 23000 emails, Governor Quinn has backed off his proposal to effectively cut teacher pay across the state by forcing us to assume an additional 2% deduction for TRS and SURS! The fight continues! What do you think?

Help Us Find Governor Quinn!

The recent demonstration in Rockford was based on an invitation to several local IEA members to attend a Democratic Party fundraiser. That inside tip gave us the time to prepare a “welcome” for the Governor.

The IIE Strategy Team (made up of IEA staff and governance) has decided to followup on your suggestions to follow the Governor around the state of Illinois with our message of “Fair Funding for All Public Schools.” If you get a tip where the Governor is going to be in the next month, please contact us at this blog!

Where Was the Governor? We Were There!

Over 300 IEA members turned out in Rockford last Thursday night to tell Governor Quinn “Fair Funding for All Public Schools!” The Governor bailed out on his scheduled event at the last minute. Were you there? What did you think? Share your thoughts. For further info, newscasts and pictures, check out the IEA website at www.ieanea.org.

Quinn Telling New Teachers Drop Dead?

Governor Quinn’s Pension Proposal would require a new teacher who begins her career at age 22 to wait until age 67 to collect a full pension. That’s 45 years in the classroom! Is the plan to reduce the state’s pension liabilities by hoping some of our new colleagues don’t make it to the finish line? What do you think?

Shades of Blagojevich!!!

Governor Quinn is proposing to stop state payments to the pension fund for the remainder of this year and reduce payments by 57% (2.3 billion) for next year! These are the same irresponsible antics of previously elected leaders which led to the current crisis. When you’re in a hole, the first thing to do is to stop digging. What do you think?
